Mutando riposa è un'opera teatrale da camera per due attori e venti spettatori.
La trama è essenziale. Un piccolo giardino ricco e rigoglioso subisce un'improvvisa devastazione. Rimangono solo pochi alberi senza fogliame, scheletrici, un ramo spezzato e scheggiato, alcuni frutti.
L'uomo che vi ha vissuto e l'ha coltivato per anni si risveglia di fronte a quelle poche rovine. Ha perduto tutto ciò che ha alimentato la solitudine della sua vita. Il padrone di quel piccolo eden, che ne aveva quasi del tutto dimenticato l'esistenza fino ad  ignorare la presenza del  suo giardiniere, è costretto ora ad ascoltare da lui il racconto di quel piccolo mondo, i canti che risuonano ostinati dai quei rami secchi e tenaci in quel mondo improvvisamente vecchio e vuoto. Dopo aver vinto l'iniziale e angoscioso rifiuto, il giardiniere lo conduce a visitare le macerie, a conoscere i piccoli segreti di quel giardino, fino a scoprire una realtà che fino a quel momento non aveva voluto o potuto riconoscere.
Mutando riposa è un lavoro teatrale maturato intorno alle esplorazioni sull'origine della coscienza che ha visto impegnati, durante una serie d'incontri e di viaggi, attori, studiosi di varie discipline e testimoni delle prove. La declinazione teatrale di questo tema è affiorata dalla necessità di riattivare alcuni aspetti del lavoro rimasti in penombra durante le prove dei precedenti spettacoli della Compagnia Laboratorio di Pontedera: la creazione di alcune risonanze emotive e percettive comuni agli attori e agli spettatori nel momento in cui oltrepassano insieme la cornice dello spettacolo.

Mutando riposa is a chamber play for two actors and twenty spectators. The plot is essential. A small garden, rich and luxuriant, undergoes sudden devastation. Only a few leafless trees remain like skeletons, a broken, splintered branch, some fruit.
The man who has lived there and cared for it for years wakes up to find the few remains. He has lost everything that nourished the solitude of his life. The owner of that tiny Eden, who had almost totally forgotten its existence to the point of ignoring the presence of his gardener, is now forced to listen to his account of that small world, the songs that echo stubbornly from the dead, tenacious branches in that suddenly old and empty world. Overcoming the initial, anguished refusal, the gardener takes him to see the ruins, to get to know the tiny secrets of that garden, finally discovering a reality that until that moment he had not wanted or been able to recognise.
Mutando riposa is a play that matured around the exploration of the origin of consciousness with the work of actors, scholars from various disciplines, and rehearsal spectators during a series of encounters and journeys. The theatrical declension emerged from the need to reactivate a number of aspects of the work which had remained in the shadows during rehearsals of the previous shows of the Compagnia Laboratorio di Pontedera: the creation of certain kinds of emotional and perceptive resonance common to actors and spectators at the moment when, together, they step outside the framework of the show.
