Da furore a cenere  

Annoiati dai luoghi comuni sull'Italia di oggi e dalla televendita di programmi elettorali, ci siamo rivolti all'arte di Carlo Emilio Gadda per interrogare le nostre radici nazionali. Eros e Priapo è per noi una tragica, reale e nello stesso tempo farsesca domanda sulla nostra contemporaneità che, come ogni effetto, ha la sua causa in un recente passato. Per la mia e per molte altre generazioni che hanno vissuto il fascismo nei documentari dell'Istituto Luce, nel cinema, nelle canzoni dell'epoca o sui libri di storia, Eros e Priapo diventa una sorta di meditazione teatrale sull'essere stati e sull'essere oggi italiani, e non solo.
Insieme a Verdastro, Scarlini e Della Monica ho accettato questa sfida ponendomi la domanda se il teatro possa ancora essere un "riflettore di realtà", uno strumento efficace per dischiudere la nostra coscienza a una riflessione non televisiva. La complessa e compiuta grandezza del linguaggio di Gadda e la generosità come attore di Massimo Verdastro, mi hanno alla fine convinto che anche la Storia dei nostri padri può continuare a vivere oggi come "osservazione di sé" e del nostro tempo, non solo come retorica testimonianza di quella tragica e grottesca realtà che è stata ed è il fascismo.

From rage to ash

Bored with the commonplaces about contemporary Italy and by the salesmanship of electoral programmes, we turned to the works of Carlo Emilio Gadda to examine our national roots.  Eros and Priapo  for us is a tragedy, a real but at the same time farcical question about contemporary life.  A present which like every effect, has its cause in the recent past. For my generation and many others that have lived through fascism in the documentaries of the Instituto Luce, in the cinema, in history books and songs of the time, Eros and Priapo  is a sort of theatrical meditation on having been and being Italian.

Together with Verdastro, Scarlini and Della Monica, I accepted this challenge, asking myself whether theatre can still be a mirror of reality.  Can theatre be an instrument for opening our consciousness to a non-televisual reflection?  The history of our fathers is a testimony to the tragic and grotesque reality that was and is fascism. The complexity and accomplishment of Gadda's use of language, and the generosity of Massimo Verdastro as an actor, convinced me that this history can also live today as self-observation and an observation of our times.
