Shen Wei Dance Arts Education Project Shen Wei: Supervision of the project Sara Procopio: NBD (Natural Body Development) technique class and improvisation Kathleen Jewett: NBD (Natural Body Development) technique class, improvisation and creation of the performance Fondazione Fabbrica Europa of Florence and Scuola d'Arte Drammatica Paolo Grassi - Fondazione Scuole Civiche of Milan, in collaboration with CanGo - Cantieri Goldonetta of Florence, organised a training project with Shen Wei Dance Arts. The project has been conceived and promoted by Marinella Guatterini for the 2° Dance-theatre Course of Scuola d'Arte Drammatica Paolo Grassi. The selection of the participats has been realized in collaboration with: Max Ballet, Florence; Opus Ballet, Florence; CPDC/Paolo Mereu, Florence.
East and West live together in the very personal contemporary language of Shen Wei, Chinese choreographer, dancer, director and artist, widely recognized for his defining vision of an intercultural, interdisciplinary, and original mode of movement-based performance.
Born in Hunan, China, Shen Wei studied Chinese opera from the age of nine. In 1991 he became a founding member of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, the first modern dance company in China. In July 2000, he formed Shen Wei Dance Arts with performances of Near the Terrace at the American Dance Festival. In 2003 his company made its New York debut at the Lincoln Center Festival.
The training and didactic project consisted of 7 weeks of work, under the direction of SWDA and Shen Wei, and some days for rehearsals and presentation of the performance. The project developed: - artistic exchange between dance students and SWDA teachers/choreographers - technique class / work in progress project - masterclass under Shen Wei direction Outcome of the education project is the performance Mycelial Sketches that was presented as a work in progress in Florence, within Fabbrica Europa 2010 (6-7-8 May) and in Milan at Teatro della Scuola d'Arte Drammatica Paolo Grassi (17-18-19 May). Mycelial sketches visits the underground world of the Earth's mushroom networks; celebrating the beauty of decomposition and paying homage to their life sustaining work.
